About Sonic the Hedgehog
Sega created a fast blue hedgehog to challenge Mario and give the Genesis a mascot. Designer Naoto Ohshima and programmer Yuji Naka built levels around speed, loops and momentum. Bundled with the console in place of Altered Beast, it helped Sega briefly lead the 16-bit console war in North America. Its attitude defined early 1990s game marketing.
