Texas based Retro Studios took Metroid into first person, a move fans initially feared. The scan visor let players read lore from creatures and ruins. It kept the exploration and backtracking of the 2D games while adding lock-on combat. It earned some of the highest review scores of its generation. A remastered version arrived on Switch in 2023.
