Gordon Freeman returns to City 17, ruled by the alien Combine. The Source engine brought realistic physics, and the gravity gun turned crates and saw blades into weapons and puzzles. Playing it required the new Steam platform, which grew into the dominant PC game store. Facial animation gave characters like Alyx Vance real emotion. Its source code leaked in 2003, a year before launch.
